Plan your ultramarathon logistics for success!

When preparing for an ultramarathon, meticulous race logistics are key. As early as possible, start familiarizing yourself with the course, aid station locations, and cutoff times. As you get closer to race day, create a detailed race day schedule, pack essential gear, and organize your nutrition and hydration strategy.

Additionally, coordinate with your support crew, if applicable, to ensure smooth transitions and access to supplies. Plan transportation arrangements to the start line and consider parking options or shuttle services. Lastly, mentally visualize each stage of the race, anticipating challenges and strategizing accordingly.

By mastering the race logistics, you`ll alleviate unnecessary stress and increase your chances of a well-executed and enjoyable ultramarathon experience!

If you don`t know where to start, a Coach or another experienced racer are great places to start!

In Running and in life, it is easy to focus solely on reaching the finish line or achieving specific goals. However, true success comes from the consistent effort and dedication put into each step of the process. Every mile run, and strength workout completed, and every obstacle overcome builds the foundation for future success. By embracing the process and committing to continual improvement, you pave the way for remarkable achievements!

When you are training, make sure to tailor your training plan to the specific demands of your goal race. Think through things like the race format, terrain, environmental conditions and other factors you will encounter on race day. Specifically preparing for these demands will help you prepare both physically and mentally for the demands of the race!

Do your hands get cold when you run? Here are a few options to keep them warm and toasty all year long!
-Gloves are the least warm option, but come in a variety of thicknesses. They are a popular option because they give you the most finger dexterity.
-Mitts are slightly warmer than gloves because they keep your fingers together, and they can warm each other up.
-Layering a few pairs of gloves and mitts is a great way to keep your hands warm. By layering a windproof shell over a warmer inner glove, you can keep the heat in, and the elements out.
-Chemical hand warmers are a great option for occasional use inside another pair of mitts or gloves on extremally cold days, or for emergency use. They typically last for 1-4 hours, and are made for hands or toes.
-Electric gloves are the most expensive option, but can be great for anyone who really suffers in the cold. They usually have a few different levels of heat output, and are powered by a rechargeable battery pack. As a bonus, they can usually be thinner, so you have a bit better finger dexterity for the same level of warmth.

Running with a group can be a great way to stay motivated and enjoy some company during your workouts, but if you have a Coach or are following a training plan, it can also be difficult to stick to your prescribed training when you`re running with others. That`s why it`s important to know the purpose of your workout before you hit the pavement or trails with your friends.

Your coach has given you specific training goals, and by understanding the purpose of your workout, you can find a balance between what your coach wants you to do and what your friends are doing. Whether you`re working on endurance, speed, or recovery, knowing the purpose of your workout will help you stay on track and make the most of your training session.

So next time you lace up your shoes and head out with your running crew, remember to ask yourself: what`s the purpose of this workout?

Running outside through the winter? Here are our top three things to keep in mind!

-Keep your feet under your center of gravity and avoid excessive heel striking or toe off to maintain traction
-If possible, don`t change directions if you are on a slippery surface, instead wait until you know you have good traction to turn
-If conditions are too slippery to safely hit the paces required for your workout, take your workout inside to the track or treadmill, or reschedule it to another day

“Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but in the hours, weeks, months and years they spend preparing for it. The victorious performance itself is merely the demonstration of their championship character.” - Alan Armstrong

Although race day can seem a long ways off, Winter is actually one of the best times to hire a Coach! The more time you have to work together, the better chances of success you will have on race day. Working one on one with a Coach can help identify any past weaknesses, and then help you build strategies to address these, optimizing your training and levelling up your next season`s performance.

Overall, investing in a running Coach during the winter is a great way to help you reach your fitness goals, improve your technique, and get a head start on your summer training!

The offseason is the best time to focus on and address your weaknesses. Since you are a long way out from any races, race specific training is minimally important, and you can instead work on improving any areas that were lacking from the previous season of training and racing.

How do you know what to work on? Think back to previous races you have done where you didn`t achieve your goals. When you race, any time you feel like you had a sub par performance, it is caused because one piece of the puzzle was weaker and gave way before the rest. As you work on these areas, the closer you can get your strengths and weaknesses, the more consistent and rewarding your performances will be!

Once you get close to race day, then you can shift your focus to honing your strengths and level up your performance!

"Running is not just a sport; it`s a profound metaphor for life`s challenges. Embrace the pain, endure the struggle, and emerge stronger on the other side." - Kathrine Switzer

As running coaches, we witness the powerful metaphor of running come alive each day. Kathrine Switzer`s words couldn`t be more true. Running isn`t just a sport; it`s a profound reflection of life`s challenges. We see runners dig deep and face discomfort, and then apply it to their everyday lives, becoming stronger both on and off the course. It`s an honor to guide and support runners on their journeys, helping them discover their inner strength and unlock their full potential. Let`s embrace the metaphor together and let running be the catalyst for growth!

With race day on the distant horizon, what should you be working on right now with your Coach to make sure you get the most out of your training this year?

Don`t forget strength! While running is crucial for developing your endurance, relying solely on your runs to also strengthen your muscles may not be enough.

Your hardest strength workout shouldn`t be your longest run. In the gym, you can overload your body with weights, preparing you for race day and helping you reach your full potential at the start line!

Success in running, like in life, is built on the foundation of consistency, and as a result, the best predictor of running performance is long periods of uninterrupted training.

To achieve this, prioritize training consistency, and focus on staying injury-free. Listen to your body, incorporate proper recovery, and take preventive measures when needed. When you can train consistently without injury, you maximize your progress. So, stay dedicated, keep that momentum going, and watch your progress compound over time!

Chantelle Erickson

Lethbridge, Alberta

Chantelle aka “the mother runner” has been running happy for 15 years. She grew up in the GTA in Ontario and moved west after high school and has been a resident of both Saskatchewan and Alberta. She has experience in obstacle racing, 5k-full marathon, relay racing, 50-100k ultras and backyard format (The Lone Wolf, Fernie, BC). Like many runners she entered the sport of running searching for health and wellness.

She began as a treadmill runner and graduated to running the beautiful gravel country roads in Saskatchewan, becoming addicted to sunshine on her face and pushing through the elements. Chantelle learned that running was the key to her mental wellness and from her early start stuck with the sport because of the positive self-image it gave and the opportunity it afforded to set goals and do the hard work to achieve dreams. From the very beginning she has been encouraging and motivating those around her to discover the sport and enter races.

She became attached to following a structure and a plan and believes this has been her success to running consistently for over a decade. She made a promise to herself to complete her first half after her son was born and she accomplished this eight-months after she became a mom. Her personal mantra continues to be “If you can believe it you can achieve it.” She has raced in Regina, Saskatoon, Calgary, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Canmore and Fernie.

Chantelle found her affinity for the ruggedness of the mountains when she backpacked 70 miles across the Bob Marshall Wilderness in 5 days with her overpacked 50lb pack! She believes this trip gave her a passion for summiting mountains and showed her what she was capable of through adversity.  She volunteered at the Lost Soul Ultra (LSU) in 2016 and was instantly inspired to break into ultra racing.

She entered the world of ultra marathoning in 2017 completing her first 50k at LSU. Endurance is her cup of coffee.  After making the podium in a couple of races (Coulee Cactus Crawl x 2 and LSU), she realized that showing up for your training plan every day pays off and that be coached is the secret to unlocking the key to become a smarter, more efficient runner.

Chantelle has overcome many good and bad experiences in racing and believes every run and race is an opportunity to learn and apply your experience to better yourself physically, mentally and emotionally. She has completed races pregnant, pushing a running stroller, in extreme windchills, heat and smoke and somehow still manages to bust a grin at every finish line. Chantelle has overcome injuries and learned the importance of strength training, physiotherapy and allowing your body to rest and recover. Running has been an outlet for overcoming some major setbacks and obstacles in Chantelle’s life.

When Chantelle is not busy running she is drinking her coffee black, instructing fitness classes (spin is her favourite), hiking, cycling, camping, creating healthy meals, reading, writing and spending time with her friends and family.  She is currently working on establishing a non-profit for youth bridging her passion for running and cycling into a physical literacy mentorship program.

Travis Brown – Head of Physiology

MKin, BKin, CSEP – Certified Exercise Physiologist

I have always been completely fascinated by how things work. I love breaking something down to it’s component parts fixing it and putting it back together again; better and more efficient than ever before. I have always been an athlete, and through my education I’ve been able to combine this fascination with breaking things down with my passion for athletics. Everyday I get to take a sport, break the training down, carefully examine each piece, and build something amazing to optimize every aspect of training for it.
